When love, even lust…..

When love, even lust, turns perfunctory,

becoming a rote/route to trek at night

…..or squelch in lone moments of secrecy,

·

a precious trait slowly turns dastardly.

We refuse to see our cascading plight

when love, even lust, turns perfunctory.

·

What is this thing; a ruse to avoid briefly

the pain of refusal’s possible bite;

to squelch a lone moment of secrecy?

·

And how can we grasp hope and change, be freed?

Can logic offer words, to gain insight

when love, even lust, turns perfunctory

·

and we lament the loss so bitterly,

when senses dulled, only channeled for heights,

are squelched in lone moments of secrecy.

·

Behind blind eyes, staring, the heart could see

and feel the will falter, unsure, in fright

when love, even lust, turned perfunctory;

was squelched in lone moments of secrecy.

    Is this a pantoum, or villanelle? I always get confused by those definitions! 🙂
    You’ve picked a good subject for it anyway, the repetitions add to the mood and its increasingly despondent tone.
    I’m unsure about the word ‘squelch’, to be honest, and think I prefer ‘quench’, but I am drawn to this sadly expressive poem nonetheless. I admire the honesty in it, and the way it points to something beyond the mere physical.
    Thought-provoking, as always, Leo.

      This is a vilanelle or pretty close. By using “squelch” I was thinking more along the idea of denying a feeling as opposed to satisfing a feeling. It is more about the dulling of emotions than the physical; although a few changed words could make it naughty! A while back I had written 4 lines, all of which are used in the poem, but I could not do anything futher with them. Then I read ” The Waking” by theodore Roethke and I felt I could use them in a villanelle. I struggled with the rhyme and trying to maintain a ten syallble line (not required for a villanelle). thanks for listening to my rambleing. Leo
