Bird Haiku

Grackle

Brazen hundreds flaunt

their stuff, screaming their presence;

conquering the trees.

Bluejay

Unsympathetic;

reigning, brassy-blue diva

of the canopy.

Bluebird

The blue of God’s eyes;

with cheek-blushed breast, you flutter

in your dainty bath.

Crow

Black hole against soft

sky blue as boy-baby blue;

harsh as a night scream.

Mourning Dove

Flushed from brush in twos;

rattling chortles of wings lift

them to lowest limbs.

They call in soft glee.

Mistaken for sad laments,

 their calls haunt our days.

Skeptical of bliss;

 we refuse to hear pure joy

of a gleeful heart.

    I have a special thing for birds, and you captured their essence. It was a pleasure to read.

      Thank you for visiting and commenting. As I sit here replying I see through my window a titmouse stealing food from the cat’s bowl! Leo

      Thanks, so much, Sally, for the award. Reading your praise of my efforts, I thought you where speaking of someone else.! I will respond but it may be awhile; remodling, replacing windows in our house. Want to hear more poems from you. Leo

    Perfect use and form and meaning for the haiku – nature with a hint of melancholy. Thanks for the master class!

    Leo, I love these. Somehow now thinking of my grandmother’s birding books–the illustrations flashed in my mind’s eye as I read these.

      Thanks for reading, Susan. We enjoy watching the birds around the yard and feeding them; they all have their unique traits and personalities. Leo
